1. To improve understanding of cultural identity and self-awareness, including your own beliefs, values, and interests.

2. To acknowledge and appreciate individual experiences, knowledge, and beliefs and how that shapes how you fit into community, school and society.

3. To implement transference of gratitude of self-awareness towards multi-cultural students and how that impacts interaction.

Pre-module Reading:

Lu, C., & Wan, C. (2018). Cultural self-awareness as awareness of culture's influence on the self: Implications for cultural identification and well-being. Personality & Social Psychology Bulletin, 44(6), 823.

Module 2:
Post-module Activity:

Have you ever asked yourself, ―who am I culturally? That is not a question that you would normally ask yourself in the course of a day; but when you are asked to identify yourself from a cultural perspective, what do you think of first? Maybe your skin color, your language, where you or your family came from, your customs and traditions?

Other ways to ask yourself about who you are culturally are through activities you have engaged in from your childhood forward. For example, play. What do you remember about your play as a child that may describe you culturally or say something about who you are, where you come from, or how you identify culturally?

Please take a a few minutes to participate in this short experiential activity. Write down what you feel defines you culturally. Afterward, take a minute to acknowledge and recognize the complexity of who you are now. Take another moment to see how living in a multicultural world exponentially multiplies that. This should help us to recognize that although we may want to live simply, life is anything but.
